What do front-of-house staff in theatres do?

Front-of-house staff are essential to the day-to-day running of theatres across the UK. They are there to ensure that audiences have an enjoyable experience. Front-of-house roles in theatre can also be called guest experience host, customer service host, customer experience team member and other variations on these titles.

Each shift will be different; on a matinee you could be working in the bar and in the evening you may be sitting in the auditorium during the show, ensuring the audience is adhering to theatre rules.

Front-of-house skills

To work front of house, you will need to be a confident communicator and have the ability to work well and remain calm in a fast-paced environment. You will need to be a team player, who can also solve problems and answer customer queries independently. For some roles, you may need sales skills or experience handling money.

Roles that include bar work may require you to be aged 18+.
